What is allergy?
Allergy occurs when your immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are usually harmless to most individuals.
Those substances are called allergens and the reaction can vary from mild to life threatening (anaphylaxis).
Mechanism of allergy
When your body is exposed to an allergen, the antibody response system is triggered. Antibodies attach to specialized cells called mast cells.
Those mast cells in turn release several substances including histamine. Histamine will cause swelling and inflammation and as such can cause great discomfort.
Allergy symptoms
Symptoms include itchy and runny nose (allergic rhinitis) eyes and throat, asthma exacerbation and breathing difficulties, colic and stomach upset, eczema, and hives.
Allergies effect one in three people on average.
